Nicole Ari Parker was born in New York City. She is an American stage and film actress. Her most famous role is was that of Teri, the passionate attorney Teri Jospehson on the Showtime show Soul Food. Nikki Kodjoe became her stage name following her marriage. Growing up in Baltimore, Maryland she showed an inclination toward acting since childhood and received an award for the best Actress award in the Maryland high school competition. Her acting diploma was earned at New York University after working at 'The Washington Ballet Company' and on stage. She was also a double major in sociology and psychology. Contractor was cast in her first show in the midst of her university year. Her performance was lauded in the 92 plays which she was a part of. The play won her the award in 2002 for the most outstanding production of the Year, as judged by Canadian critics. She was given the chance to be a part of the Stratford Conservatory, which is a private institution that accepts just eight men as well as four female students to study traditional theatre. Contractor was eager to accept. Contractor received a guaranteed spot for the following season and was given the role as Hermia.
